Boys & Girls Clubs in Texas (BGCTX), the 501c3 nonprofit chapter of Texas Alliance of Boys & Girls Clubs, is a state-approved Contract Entity Sponsor for the Child and Adult Care Program (CACFP) and the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP). The food programs are funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and administered through the Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA).

Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP)

The U.S. Congress originally established the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) in 1968 as the Child Care Food Program. The purpose of the CACFP is to provide aid to child and adult care institutions and family or group day care homes for the provision of nutritious foods that contribute to the wellness, healthy growth, and development of young children, and the health and wellness of older adults and chronically impaired disabled persons.

During the global pandemic; the following stats show the impact of the BGCTX Food Program:

 Summer Food Service Program (SFSP)

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) relies on innovative and collaborative efforts to reach children in need. The SFSP was established to ensure that low-income children continue to receive nutritious meals when school is not in session. Free meals that meet Federal nutrition guidelines are provided to all children at approved SFSP sites in areas with significant concentrations of low-income children.
The SFSP operates during school vacations, primarily in the summer months – from May through September. It may also provide meals during vacation breaks in schools that are operated on a year-round basis or a continuous school calendar, or during emergency school closures from October through April.

BGCTX provides after-school and summer meals in a variety of combinations to eligible sites at no cost to the site or site’s organization. Meal options are hot or cold meals. CACFP provides after-school snacks and/or suppers and SFSP provides breakfast, lunch, snack, or a combination of two meals.
